Our History

Welcome to the oldest preparatory school in Leicester. We are very proud of our rich history.

Leicester Preparatory School, formally known as Stoneygate College, was started in 1878 by two sisters, Miss Gertrude MacKennal and Miss Jean MacKennal. It began in a house mid-way up London Road, however the ladies soon commissioned a purpose-built building in the developing suburb of Stoneygate. That building now houses the present school. The building was designed by the Leicester architect James Tait and included a school room, gymnasium and living quarters.

The building has been in continuous use as a school since it opened in 1886. We have changed the name of the school to better represent the type of school it is, but we have kept its historic name. This makes Leicester Preparatory School (Stoneygate College) the oldest preparatory school in Leicester.

As a long-established school, we are proud of our academic standards and warm, nurturing environment. Our students, staff and parents absolutely love the school. This is reflected in the feedback we receive, which you can find on our page.

We have recently added Bertie’s Nursery to our provision. You can find more information about our nursery on the Bertie’s Nursery website, or by clicking the ‘Early Years’ tab on our page.
